There will be 4 tasks in the Norwegian oral test (Muntlig Norskprøven):
- Introduce about yourself
- Describe a picture
- Talk with other candidate about a given topic
- Individually present about a given topic
Below are practical tips for preparing for the Test.
Introduce yourself
This is a clear and mandatory question that you can prepare in advance. Write down all ideas and read it out loud for practicing, for example:
- Personal information: name, age, married or not, about your partner and children, when did you come to Norway, etc.
- Education: are you study now? What is your field? When will you graduate? What do you do next?
- Job: are you working now? Where and what is your job? Do you like it?
- Hobbies: what do you like to do in free time? Read books, watch movies….
Try to list as many as possible because the examinator will stop you when needed. You should not stop yourself, otherwise they will ask more questions.
Describe a picture
You can practice this via Youtube such as Norsklærer Karense and other channels . Try to watch and repeat yourself from what you learn.
Talk with other candidate about a given topic
This task is quite important because it focus not only on your speaking comprehension but also on your interaction with others.
This is dialogue, you shouldn’t speak alone, you should show listening and interacting skills. If you speak confidently but too much and do not let the other candidate talk, you are false. This can lead to the lowest level even though you are good in other tasks.
Try to help the other candidate. This is a very good point if you can show that you are helpful in conversation. If the other candidate is getting hard in expressing ideas or words, try to help him/her by speaking out the word; or if he/she has no idea to say, try to ask him/het simple questions. If the other candidate is so good and he/she keeps talking, try to stop him/her by asking questions or ask them to slow down, otherwise you have no chance to speak out. This is also helping the other candidate not to get false score from this task.
Individual presentation about a given topic
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you don’t understand the question, ask them to repeat or explain more. It’s very dumb if you talk about the wrong topic. Even if you have no idea to say, asking for more detail is at least you say something. This applies to all tasks in the test.
You can even get B1
You can probably get the chance to B1 level at the oral test for A1-A2. When you finish all 4 tasks, if the sensors consider you are better than A2, they may ask you to wait outside for 2-3 minutes after the test. After their discussions, they will let you know whether you can leave (it means the maximum level you can get is A2, as known) OR they may invite you come in back to have more question of B1 level (this means you definitely get A2 level, and get possibility for B1 in the result, cheers!)
